As sustainability becomes an increasingly critical goal across industries, the field of banknote production is likewise evolving to meet rising environmental standards. This presentation explores both practical and emerging strategies aimed at minimizing the ecological impact of physical currency, focusing on substrate materials, inks, security features, and other aspects of the manufacturing process. We begin by examining advancements that improve banknote durability—such as soil-resistant coatings, additives in paper pulp, and protective varnishing processes designed to extend a note’s lifespan and enhance resistance to wear and contamination. Next, we consider the development of new eco-friendly paper blends, including alternatives to traditional cotton-based substrates, which maintain performance while reducing environmental impact. The presentation also highlights the latest generation of security inks with reduced levels of harmful additives dedicated to different production processes. Together, these innovations offer a comprehensive view of how central banks and manufacturers can embrace more sustainable practices without compromising on security, usability, or cost-efficiency.
